Chiefdoms aggregated multiple societies together and, as such, could be seen as analogous to the evolution of multi-cellular organisms out of single cells, except on a societal level instead of a biological one. Like the creation of multi-cellular organisms, natural selection meant that some experiments succeeded while others failed, and the ones we see today are the ones which survived.
