Noah Smith is a deranged retard. He is, of course, very popular.

"The more fun or useful stuff you can do in VR — games, business meetings, vacations, hangouts — the less you’ll have to suck up physical resources to do it in meatspace. The more you can transform your subjective world by overlaying it with AR, the less you’ll have to suck up resources transforming your physical environment to suit your tastes."

This is the kind of argument only a robot like Noah Smith could find even remotely reasonable or attractive.

There is already the Low Consumption Agenda which is designed to lower population and prosperity for the 99%. Promoting equitable degrowth merely acts as hopium to complement the green carrot as we lose freedoms, privacy and choice...

On the subject of Renewables Vs fossil fuels, I have often noticed how frequently mainstream media and a lot of popular media outlets that specialize in Tech will often talk about how renewables are improving in energy production and price compared with Coal, but rarely with any other Fossil Fuel such as Petroleum Oil.

Coal has not only been declining in use for a long time, it also already has lower energy density compared with Petroleum in the first place. So I have often found the constant praising of Renewables by comparing them with the declining and inferior coal a rather pathetic way of avoiding the fact that they are still themselves inferior to Petroleum and in terms of energy density and production shall most likely always be so.
